The organisms change the microbial flora of the colon to a more beneficial pattern, reducing the numbers of proteolytic bacteria in the colon. Proteolytic bacteria produce toxic substances when they metabolize residues remaining from ingested food.
Apart from optimizing colonic health, an overgrowth of probiotic organisms in the colon has been associated with improved absorption of minerals, and a wide range of other health benefits have been postulated.
Though probiotic organisms in the colon can ferment most nutrients found in food, and particularly residual carbohydrate, most of these organisms preferentially ferment fructooligosaccharides (FOS).
Fermentation of FOS in the colon results in volatile fatty acids, which are absorbed, and have an effect in the brain on weight management.
An overgrowth of probiotic organisms in the colon can reduce or eliminate flatulence associated with consumption of dietary fiber or use of “starch and sugar blockers”.
Recent research has identified the large intestinal microflora (buzz word microbiota) as playing a role in weight loss as well as in general health improvement.
The rationale for administration of probiotic organisms is that they can then colonize the large intestine, and particularly if the diet contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin (longer- chain FOS) they will ferment the FOS and cause the composition of the colonic microflora to change for the better. While Soma-Biotica™ can be used as a stand-alone product, combining it with one of our FOS-based dietary fibre supplements, or with BariatricPal's Thermogenic Antioxidant Energy Powder, therefore gives even greater benefits.
But first, the probiotic organisms have to be delivered to the site where they are needed, the colon. And nearly all those who market probiotics steer clear of the fact that gastric acid kills micro-organisms! While the stomach does play an important role in digestion, not many are aware that it also has the critical task of effectively sterilizing food, so that the risks of contracting a food-borne infection are reduced nearly 1000-fold. Of course, occasionally pathogens do get through, generally in the centre of pieces of poorly-chewed food which prevents the gastric acid and enzymes from penetrating.
So all those capsules that can be found in refrigerated sections of pharmacies and grocery stores are just about useless. They may promise billions of probiotic organisms, but they do not, and cannot, promise to deliver them where they will thrive and multiply.

While it has been known for a while that intestinal bacteria can assist weight loss, it has recently been shown that the volatile fatty acids resulting from fermentation of prebiotic fibres by probiotic organisms work on the brain to induce satiety. This confirms previous empirical findings, that FOS could induce satiety, and now provides at least part of the reason.
Empirically, it now also appears that the overgrowth of probiotic organisms in the colon can also reduce or eliminate the flatulence which is often an unwanted effect of the consumption of dietary fiber or the use of starch or sugar blockers.
A brief description of the probiotic strains utilized in this probiotic product follows:
Lactobacillus Acidophilus: A lactic acid bacterium with the ability to produce hydrogen peroxide.
This may be one of the reasons it is effective in inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms from inhabiting and growing in the body. L. acidophilus produces natural antibacterials called lactocidin and acidophilin. These enhance resistance to pathogens. It is known to have an effective antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, E. coli, Rotavirus and Candida albicans. It is naturally found in humans and animals and colonizes well in the human digestive tract. L. acidophilus is one of the best-known probiotics due to its natural presence in yogurt. It takes up residence in the colon, small intestine, vagina, urethra and cervix. It aids in the production of niacin, folic acid and pyridoxine, three B vitamins. It may lower serum cholesterol and has been found to be effective against antibiotic- associated diarrhea. It also appears to offer health benefits to people suffering from atopic disease, including dermatitis. Once through the stomach, it is resistant to bile salts, so passes through readily to the colon.
Lactobacillus plantarum: This lactic acid-producing bacterium has a wide array of health benefits and is one of the probiotics of vegetal origin. It has immune stimulating effects in the human body. This strain secretes lactolin, a natural antibacterial and is known to have the ability to synthesize the amino acid lysine, which in high quantities has an anti-viral effect against some viruses such as the herpes virus which causes cold sores. L. plantarum can eradicate pathogens such as S. aureus in laboratory tests. Research suggests that it offers health effects that may benefit people with allergies, arthritis, high cholesterol, infectious diseases and irritable bowel syndrome. L. plantarum may also offer preventative effects against cancer. In a clinical trial, it reduced flatulence in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
Bifidobacterium bifidum: This strain is a dominant species in the mucus membrane that lines the large intestine and vaginal tract. B. bifidum has antimicrobial actions. It prevents the colonization of invading pathogenic bacteria by attaching to the intestinal wall, crowding out and taking nutrients from the bad microbes. B. bifidum is a lactic acid bacterium and as such it produces lactic acid and acetic acids. The production of these acids by B. bifidum lowers the pH of the intestinal environment, further inhibiting the growth of bad microbes.
Research has found that this probiotic strain enhances the assimilation of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc, all of which are essential for proper bone health and are effective in helping to assist in the prevention of osteoporosis.
Lactobacillus reuteri: One of the most studied species as it offers two unique features. L. reuteri produces reuterin, an antimicrobial substance that has been found to be effective against many pathogenic microbes including Rotavirus. L. reuteri is a gram-positive, lactic acid bacterium that was originally isolated from human breast milk and is also found in most mammalian intestines. Effective in infants and children suffering from Rotavirus infections, L. reuteri can reduce the severity and duration of diarrhea. It is also effective against antibiotic-associated diarrhea and traveler’s diarrhea. It may also be effective against diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile. Its antimicrobial actions also appear to eradicate
Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria associated with ulcer formation in the stomach. L. reuteri has beneficial effects on the immune system and appears to be useful in those with atopic diseases.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus: This strain is thought to share many of the immune-modulating effects of microbes. L. rhamnosus has antimicrobial activity and is effective in people suffering from diarrhea. Research suggests it may also down-regulate hypersensitivity and thus help in those suffering from intestinal inflammation, atopic diseases, food allergies and more. L. rhamnosus has been found to have significant benefits in the nutrition and well-being of infants and in the elderly. In the large intestine, L. rhamnosus inhibits the growth of Streptococci and Clostridia and creates conditions favorable to Bifidobacteria growth.
Bifidobacterium longum: A lactic acid bacteria that can excrete both lactic acid and acetic acid into the environment. It is resistant to bile salts. B. longum can stimulate the immune system and appears to offer some cancer prevention. It is prominent in healthy children and has been found to be beneficial against some childhood diseases. In addition, in clinical studies it has been found to reduce the frequency of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea and nausea during antibiotic use.
Bifidobacterium infantis: B. infantis is an important probiotic often found in the lower intestinal tract of humans. It has been shown to stimulate the production of immunomodulating agents such as cytokines. It positively influences the immune system. Researchers have also found B. infantis to have an antibacterial effect against pathogens such as Clostridia, Shigella and Salmonella.
