John Bergner’s 374-Pound Weight Loss: How Surgery, Mindset & the “BIG 3” Changed His Life

Marian Kate Pandita-Meneses

At 35 years old, John Bergner has lived both extremes of the weight spectrum. A former college football player from Charlotte, North Carolina, John once relied on his size as an advantage on the field. But long after his playing days ended, the weight stayed—and continued to climb.

At his highest, John weighed 599 pounds.

Today, he weighs 225.

His 374-pound weight loss didn’t happen overnight. It came from a powerful combination of weight loss surgery, mental discipline, and an unwavering commitment to three daily priorities he calls his “BIG 3.”

A Lifetime on the Weight Roller Coaster

“I’ve been on a roller coaster with my weight for as long as I can remember,” John shares.

Over the years, he tried it all structured diets, personal trainers, commercial programs like Weight Watchers. At times, he found success. But it never lasted.

“The programs changed, and I kept slipping back. Nothing ever stuck.”

In 2014, he nearly went through with weight loss surgery. He was already in the process when he applied for The Biggest Loser. After being turned down, he walked away from surgery, convinced he could lose the weight on his own.

“I was young. I thought I had time.”

But time wasn’t on his side.

The Breaking Point

By June 2023, John weighed 528 pounds. His health, mobility, and quality of life were suffering. He knew something had to change—and this time, it had to be permanent.

He began the bariatric surgery process again, this time fully committed. He credits his surgeon’s direct, no-excuses approach as a turning point.

“He’s a no-BS guy, and I needed that.”

On October 29, 2024, John went into surgery weighing 477 pounds.

Less than a year later, he reached 225 pounds.

“This has been the best decision of my life,” he says. “Surgery gave me the tool, but it’s my mindset that keeps me here.”

The BIG 3: John’s Daily Non-Negotiables

John attributes his long-term success to a simple but powerful rule: focus on the fundamentals.

He calls them his “BIG 3”:

Protein
Hydration
Exercise

If he hits those three goals every single day, he considers it a win.

1. Protein

After surgery, prioritizing protein became essential not just for weight loss, but for muscle preservation and energy. Lean meats, protein shakes, and structured meals help him stay on track.

2. Hydration

Water intake is a daily priority. Proper hydration supports digestion, recovery, and appetite control. For John, it’s a non-negotiable habit.

3. Exercise

Movement is now part of his identity. Strength training and consistent workouts help maintain muscle, improve confidence, and reinforce the discipline that carries into every other area of life.

Mindset Over Motivation

John is quick to point out that surgery alone isn’t the solution.

“Surgery gave me the tool. The work is still yours.”

His advice to anyone considering the journey is simple:

Be consistent.
Be persistent.
Stay driven.

Motivation fades. Discipline doesn’t.

Final Takeaway

John Bergner’s story is about more than dramatic weight loss. It’s about ownership, mindset, and daily commitment.

From nearly 600 pounds to 225, his transformation proves that lasting change isn’t about chasing quick fixes it’s about building sustainable habits and showing up every single day.

For John, the formula is clear: focus on the BIG 3, protect your mindset, and never stop moving forward.
