Happy Fourth – Now Plan Your Own Independence!

Alex Brecher

Happy Fourth of July! Independence Day is for parades, concerts, baseball games, fireworks…and weight loss! Wait – what does weight loss have to do with the final approval of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776? Well, just as July 4 marked a start of America’s path towards independence from the British Empire, this date can mark the start of – or your recommitment to – your own weight loss journey towards independence.

By staying committed and consistent, you can find out how good it feels to gain your own independence from weight-related health problems, from any doubts about your ability to control your own body, and from others’ judgment about your weight. Any successful war needs a battle plan, so here is some help with your own path to independence.

Set Your Goals

You’ll never stick it out through a hard battle if you don’t have a reason to do so. Setting your goals can keep you focused and motivated so you know why you’re working so hard every step of the way. Then match each goal with an action plan. For example, if your goal is:

  • To lose weight, your action plan might be to stick to your calorie goals each day.
  • To get weight loss surgery, your action plan might to schedule a consult with the surgeon and practice a pre-op diet.
  • To feel more energized, your action plan might be to eat more protein snacks and get your vitamins.

Make a Meal Plan

Take it from us if you haven’t already found this out yourself: weight loss is a lot easier when you know ahead of time what you will eat. If you leave yourself scrambling at mealtimes and snack times, you’re bound to fall for convenience foods and fast food. In contrast, eating the right foods is way easier when all you have to do is check your meal plan and follow through with whatever it says.

You can build your own meal plan if you like. Just make sure it has the right number of calories for you and your goals (ask your doctor if you’re not sure) and include plenty of protein and other healthy foods. If you’re not sure about making your own plan, just use one of ours and tweak it to meet your needs.

Stay Nourished

You wouldn’t send your troops into battle if they didn’t have the nutrients they needed, would you? Why would you even think about trying to lose weight without your vitamins? It doesn’t have to involve pills and capsules, although we certainly have plenty of those if that’s how you like to get your vitamins. You can get your bariatric and other vitamins as chewables, liquids, and even patches that you don’t need to swallow. The BariatricPal Store has multis, calcium, iron, vitamin B12, and everything in between.

As the saying goes, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” With these little steps towards thinking ahead and getting your battle plan underway, you can gain independence in your own way. Hitting goal weight can make you more confident, healthier, and feeling freer to embrace life however you want.
