Your Healthy Cinco de Mayo: Help Is Here!

Alex Brecher

Whether or not you have ties to Mexico, you can still love a good Cinco de Mayo fiesta. It’s a chance for a get-together with friends and some great food. The trouble is, that food may not be quite what the doctor ordered for weight loss.

You don’t need to miss out on Cinco de Mayo this year just because you’re losing weight, though. Just be smart about it! Here are some ideas for your fiesta. Que delicioso!

Salsa and Chips

Did you think we were going to suggest you pass up on the chips, salsa, and cheese dip? No way! You can buy a low-calorie salsa, or make your own high-protein, high-fiber Salsa Dip using this recipe. If you’re looking for a spread of dips, your guests will love the flavors of Cheese Dip and Beefy Dip as much as your waistline does. Dip your favorite crunchy veggies, or pass around the Protein Chips. That’s how to get a party started!

 “Naked” Tacos

Everyone loves a good taco, and it’s a great party food. Make the taco meat from lean ground turkey or soy crumbles and taco seasoning, or use Sloppy Joe Mix as a base for your protein. Offer salsa, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, non-fat sour cream, and even crunchy Sweet and Sour Slaw for your other toppings.

Serve your tacos “bar” style by laying the fillings out on a table and letting everyone assemble their own. You can stick to large lettuce leaves, while the others can choose shells and tortillas if they prefer.

Low-Carb Flank Steak Fajitas

Fajitas start off innocently enough. Toss your lean protein with onions and peppers, and add a little fajita seasoning to the sizzling mixture. Disaster strikes when you load the fajitas onto flour tortillas with as many as 50 grams of carbs, and pile on the fat and calories with toppings like sour cream.

Instead, why not try these lean fajitas? You can make chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or fish fajitas, but we suggest trying them with flavorful Tender Flank Steak. Use a low-carb wrap or tortilla, and add salsa and Greek yogurt to top it off. Yum!

Sweeten the Day with a Low-Sugar Dessert

Never think you need to skip dessert just because you’re losing weight. For a natural and refreshing treat that’s just right for the beginning of summer, blend watermelon with lime juice. You can also try making high-protein Key Lime Tarts or Pina Colada Cookies for crowd-pleasing favorites.

We love a good party, and we think you should, too! With these ideas for great flavors and extra protein, you can celebrate your Cinco de Mayo with your friends in style.
